Now, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that Delhi recorded the coldest month of October since 1962.”In 2020, Delhi recorded the mean minimum temperature of 17.2°C in October, which is the lowest since 1962 when it was 16.9°C at Safdarjung monitoring station,” stated IMD. The IMD scientist added that the dip is due to calm winds and the absence of cloud cover over the capital city, adding that the minimum temperature will further plummet to 10°C on November 1.The national capital had also logged the minimum temperature of 12.5°C, the lowest October temperatures in 26 years, on Thursday, October 29. The lowest-ever temperature was logged in 1937 at 9.4°C. According to the IMD, the capital city generally records a mean minimum temperature of 19.1°C in the month of October. Over the past four days, however, the minimum temperatures across the national capital have hovered around 13°C. As per the forecast, clear skies and foggy morning conditions are forecast over Delhi-NCR in the coming days. In the first week of November, especially on 2nd and 3rd, the minimum temperatures are likely to drop to 12°C in the morning hours. The daytime temperatures, on the other hand, are likely to stay at a maximum of around 30-31°C in the next seven days. Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) remained in the ‘very poor’ category on Saturday with a 24-hour average AQI of 367 in the evening hours, as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) reported that the air quality remained very poor despite better ventilation, mainly due to the unfavourable wind conditions and wind speed. Moreover, the stubble fire counts have also spiked sharply this week with more than 3,400 reported on Friday. As per the IMD, the next three months are expected to be dominated by frequent and intense episodes of cold waves in the country. The main factor behind the stark winter forecast is the prevailing weak La Niña over the Pacific Ocean since August 2020.Last year, parts of Delhi and adjoining north India experienced one of the coldest winter seasons on record in the century. The parts of North and Northwest India are mostly prone to cold waves conditions every year. Delhi records coldest November morning in 14 yearsNov 20, 2020 16:16 IST The minimum temperature in Delhi dropped to 7.5 degrees Celsius on Friday morning, five notches below normal for this time of the year. This was the lowest minimum temperature recorded in November since 2006, India Meteorological Department said. According to IMD scientists, the minimum temperature does not usually drop below 10 degrees Celsius in November. In November 2019, the lowest temperature was 11.4 degrees Celsius and in November 2018, it was 10.5 degrees Celsius. The sharp drop in night temperature is mainly because of a combination of cold winds from Western Himalayan region as well as largely clear skies in Delhi, IMD’s regional weather forecasting centre head Kuldeep Srivastava said.read more
A cold wave gripped Delhi on Monday as the minimum temperature dropped to 6.3 degrees Celsius, five notches below normal and the lowest in the month of November since 2003, according to the India Meteorological Department.
